In the dark reaches of my mind I think about why.
Why we have mistreated this vast and beautiful planet beyond her capacity to sustain us.
Perhaps if we referred to her in the masculine rather than the feminine we wouldn’t be in this mess.
As a society we tend not to exploit the masculine, we tend not to neglect the masculine.
Why we have been fooled into glorifying excess rather than the things that truly provide fulfillment.
Perhaps if we stopped focusing on infinite growth and profits we wouldn’t be in this mess.
We would understand that we are inextricably connected to the land and sea, and that all is finite.
Why we have held onto old truths and are too stubborn or ignorant or oblivious to see the new truths that are right before our eyes.
Perhaps if our identities weren’t so wrapped up in what used to be we wouldn’t be in this mess.
We could embrace and respond to the challenges of the future without disrespecting the past.
Then I emerge from the dark reaches of my mind and I am buoyed by those who are fighting against exploitation and are nourishing rather than neglecting our earth.
I am inspired by those who are turning their back on excess and materialism and are showing us all that quality is more important than quantity.
I am motivated by those who look at the facts and respond by changing; changing systems, changing technology, changing the narrative.
Even in the dark reaches of my mind there are glimpses of light.
